Health Star Ratings reflect the overall nutrition content and healthiness of packaged foods.
The HSR System graphic has three main parts
Health Star Rating:
A star rating (with a number) that shows the overall healthiness of the food based on its nutrient content per 100g or 100mL
Energy Declaration:
Shows the average energy (calories) per 100g or 100mL, or for a single portion if meant to be eaten in one sitting.
Nutrient Content Icons:
Displays icons for key nutrients like saturated fat, sugars, and sodium per 100g or 100mL, with an optional icon for one ‘positive’ nutrient.
Nutrient Profile: Often features higher levels of added sugars, sodium, or saturated fats, with limited beneficial nutrients such as fiber or protein.
Adjusting ingredients to reduce these elements could improve the rating.
Nutrient Profile: May contain moderate levels of sugars, salt, or fat, with only limited amounts of nutrients that add positive health value.
Reformulation to include healthier ingredients or reduce sugars and sodium may raise the rating.
Nutrient Profile: Often involves lower levels of added sugars, salt, and saturated fat and can include beneficial nutrients like fiber and protein.
Achieving this rating may require a reduction in certain additives and an increase in whole grains or protein.
